Coleman 228F lantern

I just got a 228F big hat up and running. It has a nice yellow light and the reflector makes it perfect for sitting on a picnic table.

Man, that is a sweet lantern. I have a 228 from 1967 that was given to me to replace the lantern that was stolen. I must get this cool old "Big Hat" running again.

Do you know about Peerless mantles? Made in India and better quality than Coleman. Made the same as Coleman mantels used to be made. I've heard they still use thorium!

I had to replace the burner assembly, pump, and cap seal to get mine back up and running. I stumbled on the Peerless mantels when I was looking to see what model number I needed. I think I tied the string to tight on the first batch as they fell of the burner. I kept the mantle string as loose as I could on the second batch and they're working like a champ. The replacement pump has the leather cup and doesn't work worth a crap, I need something a little more synthetic.

Bruce, The leather pump washer should be better than the plastic one. Did you oil it with motor oil? I've got all my two stoves and 4 ( now three... ) lanterns pumping by soaking the old washer with regular oil. I don't remove it from the shaft, just squirt oil all over the leather. I've had problems with the check valve at the bottom of the pump.

Yeah, I oiled it. It only engages about every 10th pump. My Peak One lantern has a synthetic cup and it works flawlessly.

It sounds like you did not work the oil into the pump cup. All that needs to be done is after soaking is to flex the cup until it is flexible.

I've been watching YouTube, I just ordered some Neatsfoot oil and I'll try soaking it in that.

Hmmm! I wonder if you are having problems with the check valve at the bottom of the pump. Does the pump shaft push back up while you are pumping? Those check valves have been a problem for me. I used some penetrating oil on every check valve to clean and loosen it up. Just spray a little at the bottom of the tube where the check valve resides. The penetrating oil also helps get the leather soft but I follow up with common motor oil on the leather.

I don't think it's the check valve but I'll try the penetrating oil if the cup fix doesn't work.

Thanks,
Bruce
P.S. Just got a 200A, I've always wanted one...
