I had been towing with a 2012 Honda CRV (with a std. 2.0L engine) but found that the extra weight caused it to always downshift 2 gears going up even the slightest hill, and my TD only weighs 700lbs. My mileage would drop from above 30mpg to 15-20 depending upon the terrain, headwinds, etc.
I just traded it in on a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that in 2014 has a 2.5L engine and 6 gears instead of 4. I'm happy with the vehicle so far (except for the buggy USB audio and bluetooth electronics) but have not had an opportunity to tow anything yet since the teardrop is hibernating for the winter. I'm hoping the extra power, torque, and gearing will handle towing a lot easier and I should get a lot better gas mileage.
If you look at the CX-5 note that the Touring and Grand Touring models have the 2.5L engine, not the Sport model.
